Cummins Showcases Military Battery Hybrid Power Unit At AUSA 2019
Cummins says that its new Tactical Energy Storage Unit is the first battery hybrid power generation system for military use. It works with the company’s AMMPS (Advanced Medium Mobile Power Sources) generators currently serving U.S. troops in Afghanistan, Africa, South Korea, and also domestically to provide a more reliable and powerful energy solution.
“The Tactical Energy Storage Unit is a safe, quiet, and high-quality product that we are pleased to bring to the U.S. military,” says Program Manager of Cummins Military Programs, Doreen Swanson. “Cummins has an 80-year history of providing quality service and dependable power solutions to our armed forces, and this builds on that legacy. It is an honor to provide products that have a direct impact on improving the safety and well-being of U.S. military professionals in the field.”
Power For The Troops
The new Tactical Energy Storage Unit kicks in when demand exceeds the AAMPS generators’ capacity. It connects to the BMS (Battery Management System), Inverter Control System, and Unit Control System to smooth out load changes, improve transient performance, maintain the microgrid, and clean up power to sensitive devices. The unit also reduces the need for generator maintenance and reliance on diesel fuel out in the field.
The IP66-rated enclosure of the Tactical Energy Storage Unit houses batteries designed for mobile outdoor usage. The rugged unit incorporates a three-phase, 60-kilowatt bidirectional inverter and HVIL (high-voltage interlock loop) connectors, along with a master service disconnect switch.
"We are excited to learn more about the new capabilities the Tactical Energy Storage Unit system will offer,” says Product Manager for Mobile Electric Power Systems, Lieutenant Colonel Tony Leach.
The AMMPS generator, 21,000 of which are currently deployed according to Cummins, debuted last year in 5- to 60-kilowatt configurations. It replaced the military’s venerable TQG (Tactical Quiet Generator) with 40% greater reliability, 35% less noise, 21% better fuel efficiency, and 10% less size and weight.
Find The Right Cummins
Cummins showed the new Tactical Energy Storage Unit at the 2019 AUSA (Association of the United States Army) show that took place in Washington, D.C. October 14 to 16. The company also highlighted its two-stroke, opposed-piston, diesel-burning ACE (Advanced Combat Engine) which yields 50% more power density and 13% better fuel economy, as well as 21% lower thermal rejection. Cummins’ V903 diesel for the Bradley ECP 2 and AMPV (Armored Multi-Purpose Vehicle) was on display at the show as well.
PowerSystemsToday.com has a broad selection of new and used Cummins generators for sale, including stationary and towable models.
