Cummins C550D5E Genset Provides Standby Power To Pakistani Bottling Plant
A 500-kilovolt-ampere (400-kilowatt) Cummins Power Generation C550D5e generator set is now acting as a backup power source for a soft drink bottling plant in Pakistan. The 170,000-square-foot (15,800-square-meter) facility, which includes offices as well as the plant itself, belongs to Sukkur Beverages, credited with introducing carbonated soft drinks to the inner Sindh and southern Punjab regions more than 45 years ago.
Local distributor Orient Energy Systems installed the emissions-controlled Cummins genset and synchronized it with the facility’s two existing 1,250 kVA generators via a control system. “The customer was looking for an OEM product with better aftersales support and engineering expertise available within the country,” says Muzaffar Iqbal of the OES Sales & Marketing department.
By The Numbers
The Cummins C550D5e generates 50 Hz power for countries such as Pakistan, and its diesel engine conforms to EU Stage II emissions levels. (For nations that use 60 Hz power for its appliances, including the United States, Cummins makes EPA Tier 2 gensets such as the C500D6e.) The C550D5e has a standby rating of 550 kVA (440 kW) and a prime rating of 500 kVA (400 kW). The company powers the generator with an inline six-cylinder, direct-injection, turbocharged engine with 15 liters of displacement.
Including its enclosure, the genset measures 5.1 meters long, 1,553 millimeters wide, and 2,447 mm in height. The Cummins system comes standard with the PowerCommand 2.2 control system to regulate the voltage, protect the engine and alternator, and so on. The optional PowerCommand 3.3 system adds upgrades such as a higher-resolution display and the ability to control the paralleling breaker directly, among other enhancements.
