Caterpillar Expands 50-Hz Diesel Standby Generator Sets Up To 3,500 kVA
Caterpillar has announced six new 50-Hz standby gensets rated between 3,000 and 3,500 kilovolt-amperes. The new generator sets, all part of the 3516E model group, extend Cat’s diesel generator lineup from 800 kVA to 3,500 kVA in power density.
“Customers evaluate standby power solutions across many dimensions beyond power output and price,” says Caterpillar Large Electric Power Solutions General Manager Bart Myers. “These new power ratings demonstrate Caterpillar’s continued investment in our engine and power technologies to give our customers superior product value accompanied by our unmatched design and dealer support.”
Six Right-Sized Options
The six new gensets from Cat include three with Tier 2 emissions compliance ranging from 3,000 kVA to 3,500 kVA; two with very low nitrogen oxide emissions (under 2,000 milligrams per cubic meter) and 3,000 kVA to 3,250 kVA of standby power; and a low-NOx model rated at 3,500 kVA for regulated applications. Each model has a 15% smaller physical footprint than an unnamed competitor’s equivalent product and weighs nearly 10 tons (8.8 metric tons) less, according to Cat. All are available with a low-, medium-, or high-voltage frame alternator, which facilitates quick starts to accept the load without requiring a larger genset.
The new Cat systems all use the ADEM A5 engine control module, which starts, governs, and protects their engines while maintaining the proper air-fuel ratio. The gensets can handle 100% of block load in one step. They meet NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) power restoration requirement for Level 1 systems, as well as ISO 8528-5 G3 requirements for steady state and load acceptance, Cat says.
