Caterpillar Diesel Generator Sets To Provide More Prime Power To Panama’s Pearl Islands

The Islas de las Perlas, also known as the Pearl Islands, lie about 30 miles (48 kilometers) from the Pacific coast in the Gulf of Panama. The scenic archipelago of 200-plus small islands is known for its wildlife sanctuaries, white-sand beaches, coral reefs, and opportunities for scuba divers and whale watchers. Not far from the modern Panama Canal, the Pearl Islands used to be an important provisioning site for the Spanish conquistadores and their ships.

Being relatively remote, the islands rely on 16.2 megawatts of energy generated by 20 Caterpillar diesel and gas generator sets such as the G3512H. But the islands’ needs are growing.

Power To Las Perlas

Island Power, S.A. (IPSA), the Pearl Islands’ power authority, has asked Panama Cat dealer IASA PANAMA for 28 more Cat diesel gensets to power its residents’ homes, businesses, and tourism facilities. The new generator sets will provide roughly 11 MW of additional prime power to the islands and other remote sites in need.

IASA will install and commission the new Cat diesel gensets in late June and throughout July.
