Caterpillar Debuts Enclosures For Combined Heat and Power (CHP) G3520H Generator Sets

Caterpillar has announced that it will produce standardized enclosures for its 4,160-volt to 13.8-kilovolt Combined Heat and Power (CHP) generator sets using G3520H engines powered by natural gas. CHP is a growing industry, the company says, in which gensets provide not only electricity but also heat for a facility.

“Where grid power and boilers provide less than 50% efficiency, Cat CHP or cogeneration projects can offer energy efficiencies up to 90%,” says Caterpillar’s Electric Power Division General Manager Bart Myers. “Utilizing CHP saves our customers energy costs by eliminating the need for them to run separate heat and electrical generation systems.”

The new enclosures are available now in North America and come with a warranty.

Natural Gas Benefits

“In addition to the cost benefits, CHP offers customers greatly reduced emissions,” said Myers. “Many of our customers are looking at reducing greenhouse gas emissions and utilizing CHP solutions allows them to do just that—sometimes even permitting them to obtain carbon credits.”

Caterpillar’s Gas-Powered Generator Sets

The G3520 line of Cat gensets includes models that can run on biogas and coal gas as well as on natural gas. They provide up to 2,519 electric kilowatts of continuous power at a power factor of 1.0 with electrical efficiencies of up to 45.3%.

Cat offers industrial and commercial gas generator sets ranging from 50 to 9,700 ekW and 50 to 12,125 kilovolt-amps (kVA).
