NorthWestern Energy Selects Caterpillar G20CM34 Generators For New South Dakota Power Plant
NorthWestern Energy has chosen six Caterpillar G20CM34 natural gas-powered generator sets for a new, 58-megawatt power plant being constructed near Huron, South Dakota. The efficient, fast-starting Cat gensets will work in conjunction with power from renewable resources. They will replace the Huron Generating Station’s current combustion turbines, reducing emissions and fuel consumption.
“With a fast start time, short ramp-up and ramp-down times, and low operating costs, Cat gas generator sets will help NorthWestern Energy provide reliable and efficient power to its grid,” says Claudio Martino, Caterpillar’s sales manager for medium-speed reciprocating technology in the Americas.
The New Plant
Construction of the new power plant will commence next month on the grounds of the current facility. Its building will be smaller and more set back than the existing power plant. It is expected to come online by the end of next year.
Huron will represent the fourth installation of Cat G20CM34 generators in the United States. Cat says that there are more than 150 engines from the GCM34 family in the U.S. and Canada. The company is also providing Cat Connect technology, control solutions, switchgear, exhaust stacks, and selective catalytic reduction (SCR) emissions aftertreatment systems for the new installation.
