Caterpillar Launches Quick-Starting, Quick-Loading G3520 2- & 2.5-MW Natural Gas Generators
Caterpillar says that its new family of G3520 generator sets are the first EPA-certified, natural gas-powered 60 Hz units rated at 2.0 and 2.5 megawatts of power. The clean-burning standby generators bring fast starting and quick load acceptance to data centers, office buildings, schools, government buildings, and other facilities. They can also be used for peak shaving or load management, according to Cat.
“There isn’t another gas generator set on the market like this one,” says Cat’s Electric Power Division Product Manager Brian George.
New, Yet Familiar
Based on Cat’s well-known diesel 3500 platform, the new natural gas G3520 product line is run by a 20-cylinder engine with steel pistons and a protective monitoring system. “With an updated package design, the G3520 is modeled after Caterpillar’s diesel standby product to minimize installation costs and commissioning time,” George says.
The genset uses the EMCP 4 control system with Ethernet networking capability for building management system integration. The optional EMCP 4.4 system adds the ability to run other generators in parallel, including gas and diesel models. The new G3520 meets NFPA 110 Level 1 Type 10 standards and is UL 2200 listed. Cat Power Systems also offers a version with nitrous oxide emissions as low as 0.5 grams per brake horsepower-hour.
“The combination of certifications and critical customer requirements addressed by this product line provides market-leading performance for the standby market at 2.5-megawatt power output,” says George.
