Caterpillar has launched its new G3412, a natural gas-powered generator set rated at 500 kilowatts of power. The 60-Hz unit is designed for quick starting and loading—accepting 100% of block load in just 7.5 seconds—as well as durability. It has EPA Stationary Emergency Certification, meets NFPA 110 Level 1 Type 10 standards, and is UL 2200 listed. The G3412 is ideal for mission-critical standby applications, Cat says, including healthcare, retail, and governmental facilities as well as edge data centers and small colocation applications.

“With vast improvements in the ability of gas engines to meet code-driven start time and load acceptance standards, the market for natural gas standby power generation is taking a significant step forward,” says Caterpillar’s Electric Power division product manager, Brian George. “There are applications where gas generators have advantages over diesel. In fact, there are applications where emission rules and fuel security concerns make gas engines the best choice.”

    Cat Power

The Cat G3412 is powered by a 12-cylinder engine that can run on a low-pressure supply of natural gas and comes with a gas train. Its maximum standby rating is 512 ekW at a power factor of 0.8. The genset can easily connect to building management systems and uses Cat’s EMCP 4.4 controller. The G3412 comes with simple wiring hookups, a mounted radiator, and options to run the genset in parallel. A factory-built skin-tight or canopy enclosure is also available as an option.

“With industry-leading design and rapid response, Cat natural gas generator sets deliver dependable backup power without compromising performance,” George says.
