Caterpillar has announced the availability of new temporary connection boxes for mobile generator sets. Meant to be permanently mounted on the outside of a building, the NEMA 3R-weatherproof docking stations provide a National Electric Code (NEC)-compliant means of connecting a rented genset to a hospital, business, factory, or other facility in the event of an outage or unscheduled service of an existing, permanent generator. The boxes are available now in North and South America.
"Understanding where and how to connect to your facility’s emergency power system is an essential component of a well-designed contingency preparedness plan," says Caterpillar Rental Power General Manager Tom Caldwell. "The new Cat temporary connection boxes are designed with ancillary connection options, ensuring that Cat XQ mobile generator sets, which are immediately available through our extensive Cat dealer network and at Cat Rental Stores, can be safely and quickly connected to supply critical power during emergencies or when performing service on existing permanent units.”
Power Docks
Cat offers four types of connection box in the new series. One is a simple lug-to-lug tap box that supports 200 to 3,000 amperes. Another features circuit breaker protection and is rated for 200 to 800 amps. Finally, there are camlock tap boxes in wall-mount (400 to 2,400 amps) and freestanding (1,600 to 4,000 amps) forms.
Options include a phase reversal relay that visually indicates correct phase rotation, support for a remote start signal from the building’s transfer switch, and a block heater shore power receptacle with an internal disconnect. The pre-warmed unit keeps two 30-amp twist-lock receptacles ready for use at a moment’s notice.
"These boxes have been engineered to provide a simple connection for a mobile generator set or load bank, assuring the facility has a solid mechanism for maintaining and testing their permanent assets without interrupting their backup power capabilities," says Caterpillar Switchgear Business Development Manager Marc Godwin.
