Chattanooga’s Tennessee Aquarium has selected a Caterpillar D350 GC diesel generator set to provide standby power to its aquatic facilities. The 350-electric-kilowatt unit is EPA-certified for stationary emergency applications. Local dealer Stowers Cat installed the backup genset for the tourist attraction in April.
“We have about 1.1 million gallons of water that is used to house our aquatic collection,” says Rodney Fuller, the Aquarium’s director of facilities and safety. “We have to make sure that the environment that they live in is as close to what they would experience in the wild as possible. Providing a clean, temperature-controlled environment is very important, and having reliable power is a big part of that.”
The D350 GC Diesel Genset
The Cat D350 GC is a 60-Hz, 480- or 600-volt standby unit. The 437.5-kilovolt-ampere generator set is UL 2200-listed and comes in either an open format or in a sound-attenuated enclosure. Caterpillar says it provides “excellent” transient response and steady state performance. The generator’s footprint is just 182.8 inches (4,643 millimeters) long and 64.2 in (1,630 mm) wide.
Cat’s Electronic ADEM A4 control unit governs the operation of the D350 GC. The generator is powered by a six-cylinder Cat C13 diesel engine with an air-to-air aftercooled turbocharger. The 12.5-liter motor meets EPA Tier III emissions standards.
Other gensets in the Cat GC family range from 250 to 600 ekW of power. All provide superb value for the money.
“With the aquarium being a nonprofit organization, controlling costs is very important,” Fuller says. “The new model offered us a price break that we were looking for, while still providing the functionality that we need.”
