Kohler’s KD Series Industrial Diesel Generators Now Tier 4 Final-Compliant
Kohler Power Systems’ KD1250-4, KD2500-4, and KD3250-4 large diesel industrial generators have been certified for EPA Tier 4 Final emissions standards for non-emergency applications such as prime power, peak shaving, and curtailment. The generator sets are named for their maximum standby power rating, as in the KD1250-4’s ability to provide up to 1,250 kilowatts of standby power.
“We are providing the simplest yet most effective and reliable solution with lower total cost of ownership, and we’re ensuring no loss of power and performance from regeneration because there is no DPF (diesel particulate filter),” says Brad Meissner, Kohler industrial generators product manager. “Our 3,250-kilowatt (standby power) generator represents the largest Tier 4 Final-certified unit available in the market, and we are the only manufacturer providing a Tier 4 Final generator with a factory-direct enclosed option.”
Meeting Air Quality Standards
The heat-insulated exhaust aftertreatment systems on the KD1250-4, KD2500-4, and KD3250-4 are modular, meaning that Kohler equips them with one, two, and three selective catalytic reduction components (SCR), respectively. The SCRs share parts in common, and also act as critical grade silencers for healthcare and other applications requiring quiet operation.
The three Kohler gensets also use diesel exhaust fluid (DEF). The stainless-steel DEF tank fits within the enclosure footprint and matches the size of the diesel tank. The DEF system is powered by a dedicated DC power supply. It requires no compressed air. To avoid crystallization, the system purges back into the DEF tank. Kohler stresses that the gensets’ aftertreatment systems don’t use a DPF or diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC).
Other Features
The three generators use a K135 16-cylinder, K175 12-cylinder, or K175 16-cylinder diesel engine. The KD1250 and KD2500 are offered as packaged systems in an open configuration or in an SL2-configured enclosure. A KD Series APM603 control unit manages each genset’s operation. The controller supplies voltage regulation of +/-.25%, a 7-inch color touchscreen display, and support for up to eight generators operating in parallel.
