Peak-Shaving Caterpillar G3520 Natural Gas Generator Set To Save Maryland Town Big Bucks
Berlin, Maryland, has just installed a new, 2-megawatt Caterpillar G3520 natural gas generator to perform peak shaving operations. The new Cat joins three other generator sets and will operate about 100 hours per year to offset the cost of energy during peak demand periods in the summer and winter. Town officials believe that the addition of the Cat generator will help its peak shaving system save up to $600,000 in annual energy costs.
“The new high-efficiency generator set from Carter Machinery and Caterpillar provides the low-cost electricity we need while helping to achieve sustainability goals for the region,” says Berlin town administrator Jeff Fleetwood.
“We take tremendous pride in offering the lowest prices for electricity on Maryland’s Eastern Shore,” says Berlin Electric Utility Director Tim Lawrence. “This Cat gas generator set offers the reliability and low total owning and operating costs that will benefit the town’s finances and utility customers for years to come.”
Caterpillar’s G3520
Cat Power sells a variety of 2.0- and 2.5-MW, 60-Hz G3520 gensets for different applications. The 2,000-electric kilowatt natural gas model is EPA-certified for use in emergency and non-emergency applications. The G3520 can be ready in as little as 7.5 seconds, Cat says, and it can accept 100% of block load. The genset complies with NFPA 110 Level 1 Type 10 and other industry specifications.
“Cat gas generator sets are designed to deliver low-emissions, high-efficiency performance to the utilities and their customers who rely on them for the long haul,” says Caterpillar’s Electric Power Division General Manager Bart Myers.
The G3520 uses a high-power-density, 20-cylinder engine with fast transient response. Its unified electronic control module oversees its ignition, governing, air-to-fuel ratio control, and engine protection functions to keep emissions low and efficiency high. The generator set features an EMCP 4.3 control panel and an SR5 generator. An optional NOx-selectable genset is available to meet most worldwide emissions standards without exhaust aftertreatment.
