Caterpillar’s 2 MW Standby/1.8 MW Prime 60-Hz XQ2280 Power Module Complies With Tier 4 Final Emission Standards

Caterpillar says that its new 60-Hz XQ2280 mobile generator set is the first in the industry to exceed 560 kilowatts with a single engine that meets Tier 4 Final emission standards. Housed in a weather-resistant 48-foot (14.6-meter) wheeled container, which cuts its noise level down to 81 dB(A) at 75% of prime load, the XQ2280 supplies up to 2 megawatts of standby power or 1,825 kW of prime power. It’s suitable for rental duty at North American data centers, healthcare facilities, municipal infrastructure sites, wastewater treatment plants, other utilities, mines and quarries, and the like.

“As the need grows for temporary power solutions that can support operations at an enterprise scale, the Cat XQ2280 offers superior prime and standby power performance in a complete, easy-to-operate package that meets North America’s most stringent emission standards,” says Caterpillar’s Global General Manager for Electric Power Rental Solutions, Tom Caldwell.

Cat Power

A Cat 3516C diesel engine supplies the power for the new XQ2280 genset. The motor can alternatively use up to 100% hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO). Its dual-wall fuel tank is sufficient for 10 hours of prime operation, the manufacturer says. The diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) refill port is on the same side as the fuel refill, and both liquid systems can be adapted to utility and continuous-use scenarios. There’s an optional cold-weather package for reliable start-up and operation in freezing temperatures.

Operators can use Cat’s EMCP 4.4 digital control panel to manage the XQ2280. It’s also accessible through a new, external touchscreen that can start, stop, and otherwise control the generator set from outside its enclosure. The system includes a programmable logic controller (PLC) feature so the XQ2280 can be adapted to various application requirements.

The XQ2280 also supports Cat Connect telematics and connectivity, which lets owners remotely track and manage the genset and monitor its run status, fuel and DEF levels, and more.
