Winco Low-Kilowatt Commercial Portable Generators: A Closer Look

    Winco W3000H/D

Winco’s Industrial Line of portable, single-phase generator sets includes a number of models rated at 10 kilowatts or less. The company says it builds its generators for years of service, even under harsh conditions, and that it tests each unit under full load at the factory.

All of the following low-kW Winco generator models have National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA)-style power receptacles for North American usage. Most of the outlets have ground fault circuit indicator (GFCI) protection as standard or as an option.

Winco protects its portable generators with a durable powder-coat finish, a welded cradle of tubular steel, and automatic shutdown if the engine oil pressure is too low. Options vary by model and include dollies, generator covers, batteries, low-pressure fuel solenoid kits, and/or maintenance kits.

    The Winco Portable Genset Lineup

W3000H/D. Also called the Lil’ Dog 3000, this gasoline-powered generator is a 120-volt model with 3,000 starting watts and 18 running amperes. Like the majority of the sub-10-kW models from Winco, it uses a capacitor to regulate its voltage. The W3000H/D offers two 20-A GFCI 120-V receptacles. Its engine is a Honda GC160 with EPA Prime-rated emissions. The 72-pound (33-kilogram) portable comes with a one-year commercial warranty.

DP3000HR-01/A. This 120-V Winco generator has a three-year commercial warranty and an oversized generator end for easier startup of its Honda GX160 gasoline engine. It is rated at 3,000 starting watts, 2,500 running watts, and 20.8 running amps. The 110-lb (50-kg) generator has a single 20-A GFCI outlet.

    Winco HPS9000VE-03/B

DP5000HR-03/A. The OSHA-compliant DP5000HR-03/A offers a 120/240-V 30-A outlet as well as two 20-A GFCI 120-V receptacles. With less than 5% total harmonic distortion (THD), the generator can safely power sensitive electronics, according to Winco. This model also features a YourGen Meter, which uses LEDs to display the generator’s hours, rpm, voltage, and frequency readings, along with a bar-style gauge representing the load balance. The YourGen Meter also issues an alert when the generator has exceeded its parameters and when the system is due for an oil change.

The DP5000HR-03/A is rated to 5,000 starting watts, 4,560 running watts, and 38/19 running amps. Its engine is a Honda GX270 gasoline unit with emissions levels that meet EPA Prime, California Air Resources Board (CARB), and Canadian Standards Association (CSA) requirements. The genset weighs 178 lbs (81 kg) and comes with a three-year commercial warranty.

DP7500HE-03/A. The gasoline-powered DP7500HE-03/A is a 120/240-volt system suitable for residential and professional applications. It can produce up to 7,500 starting watts, 6,720 running watts, and 56/28 running amps. It offers a 120/240-V 30-A plug and two 20-A GFCI 120-V outlets. Its Honda GX390 engine meets CSA, CARB, and EPA Prime requirements. The 190-lb (86-kg) Winco model includes a three-year commercial warranty. It also has a YourGen Meter and a THD rating of less than 5%.

HPS6000HE-03/B. According to Winco, the HPS6000HE-03/B is “the only bi-fuel capable, Honda-powered generator on the market that does not void the engine warranty.” The Honda GX340 motor in the generator set can run on either natural gas or gasoline. The 224-lb (102-kg) HPS6000HE-03/B has a 120/240-V 30-A plug and a 120-V 20-A GFCI receptacle. It generates up to 6,000 starting watts, 5,500 running watts, and 45/22.9 running amps. Winco backs it with a two-year residential warranty.

HPS9000VE-03/B. This tri-fuel power plant has a Briggs & Stratton Vanguard engine that retains its warranty despite the option to fuel it with liquid petroleum gas (LP), natural gas, or gasoline. The 120/240-V genset has dual 120-V 20-A outlets and a single 120/240-V 30-A plug. Its starting wattage figure is 9,000, its running wattage is 8,000, and its running amperage ratings are 66.7/33.3. The HPS9000VE-03/B is protected by a two-year residential warranty. It weighs 272 lbs (123 kg).

    Winco EC6010KE-03/B

W10000VE-03/B. Winco’s W10000VE-03/B uses a +/-1% automatic voltage regulator (AVR) instead of a capacitor-style regulator, and is compatible with sensitive electrical equipment. It can supply up to 10,000 starting watts, 9,600 running watts, and 80/40 running amps. The generator includes a YourGen Meter and a three-year commercial warranty.

Standard receptacles on the W10000VE-03/B include two 20-A GFCI 120-V units, one 50-A GFCI 120/240V plug, and a 30-A GFCI 240-V outlet. The 50- and 30-A receptacles can optionally be ordered with different NEMA plug patterns. The 298-lb (135-kg) generator’s Briggs & Stratton Vanguard gasoline engine meets CARB and EPA Prime emissions criteria.

EC6010KE-03/B. The EC6010KE-03/B is one of two diesel-fueled members of the sub-10-kW Winco generator group. It uses a Kohler KD440 engine that complies with EPA Prime emissions levels. The system’s panel and fuel pump can be installed on either side of the generator to fit the customer’s needs. Its single 120/240-V 30-A outlet’s power is regulated by an AVR system. The 6,010-starting watt, 5,160-running watt generator can supply 21.5 running amps in 240-V mode. A YourGen meter reports the operating status of the 240-lb (109-kg) EC6010KE-03/B, which has a three-year commercial warranty.

W6010KE-03/B. This unit is Winco’s other diesel model in this low-kW, portable collection. Offering more outlets than the EC6010KE-03/B, and capacitor voltage regulation instead of AVR, the W6010KE-03/B nevertheless uses the same air-cooled Kohler KD440 motor and is capable of the same wattage and amperage outputs. The 268-lb (122-kg) generator has two 20-A GFCI 120-V plugs, a 30-A GFCI 120-V receptacle, and a 30-A GFCI 120/240-V outlet along with a YourGen meter. It’s warranted for three years in a commercial application.
