    About Towable Generators

Towable generators are trailer-mounted units that convert fuel into electrical power. They can be used for prime power on jobsites where electricity isn’t yet available to run lights, tools, and other equipment. You can also use them for standby power during outages. Many towable models on a single- or tandem-axle trailer are small enough to pull with a standard pickup truck, but more powerful mobile generators on semitrailers with three or more axles require a semitruck to tow them.

Generators typically consist of a combustion engine, a starter, an alternator, a fuel tank, and power outlets. Output wattage varies by model, but towable generators can produce 10 to 2,000 kilowatts or more, making them a fit for a wide range of applications where mobility is a must. Some towable units are designed as light towers, providing overhead lighting as well as electricity. Others are welder generators, also called “engine-driven welders,” which combine power generation with welding capabilities.

    Towable Generator Fuels

Most towable generators run on diesel, but other potential fuel sources include gasoline, LPG, natural gas, and propane. Fuel tank sizes will range anywhere from 30 to 1,000 gallons (113.5 to 3,785 liters) and up. Fuel capacity and efficiency will ultimately dictate how long a generator can run under a given load before requiring a refill. Some are designed to last a handful of hours, to buy you time to get primary power back up or to run tools for a short period, but others can last for an entire day or more at full load on a single tank.

Before you buy a diesel-powered towable generator, verify that it meets the emission standards for the areas you plan to work in, such as the Tier 4 Final standard from the Environmental Protection Agency.

Towable Generator Outlets & Welder Generators

Because towable generators are often more powerful than portable models, they sometimes have higher-voltage outlets for driving high-powered equipment. Whereas portable generators typically offer 120- and 240-volt outlets, many towable generators provide a 480-V option on top of that. This makes them ideal for powering heavy-duty equipment, including welders.

Speaking of welders, some towable generators are specifically designed as welder generators, providing both power generation and multiprocess welding capabilities for on-site fabrication and repair. Engine-driven welders are available from brands such as Lincoln Electric, Miller Electric, and Tomahawk Power.

    Towable Generator Specs To Consider

Important considerations when selecting a towable generator include its continuous or standby wattage rating, number and type of outlets, and running time on a tank of fuel under a given load, which is related to its fuel tank capacity.

You must have a tow vehicle that can easily pull the generator’s gross trailer weight, as some towable generator models can weigh 10,000 pounds (4,536 kilograms) or more. In addition, make sure that your tow vehicle’s hitch and receiver can support the tongue weight of the trailer.

Cost is another factor, of course, as prices for a towable generator can range from about $3,000 to $700,000 or more.

    Towable Generator Safety

Like other classes of generators, a towable generator can be dangerous if not used properly. Verify that its trailer’s tires are properly inflated and its taillights and brakes (if equipped) work correctly. Use safety chains when towing the generator, and be certain that the tow vehicle has the proper type and size of hitch to keep the trailer from coming loose in transit.

Other safety concerns apply to generators of all types, such as only using them outdoors or in well-ventilated areas to prevent carbon monoxide inhalation. Also, bear in mind that generators need time to start up and will run well above peak power during this period, so you should wait to plug in any tools or equipment until the startup cycle is complete to prevent overloading and possible damage.

If you use a towable or other generator to power a home or building, always connect it with a properly installed transfer switch. Don’t ever plug a generator directly into an outlet on the structure (called "backfeeding"), which can endanger electric company personnel working to restore power.
