    About Kohler

Michael Kohler founded Kohler Co. in 1873 in Wisconsin, initially manufacturing plows and other agriculture equipment. Over the next few years, the company expanded to include bathtubs, originally sold as cast-iron hog scalders and water troughs. With that, the company officially entered the plumbing product industry, which is what it primarily known for today. However, Kohler has also had a long history in the power generator market, which started in 1920 when Kohler says it introduced the world’s first engine-powered electric generator, the Kohler Automatic Power & Light.

    Kohler 20 kW Stationary Generator

It didn’t take long for Kohler’s generators to make their mark on the industry and on history itself. In fact, Admiral Richard Byrd used Kohler generators on his first expedition to the South Pole in 1929 and brought seven more of them along with him on his second expedition in 1934. When he arrived, he found that the first set of generators were still operational. The company also played a role in World War II by producing plumbing fixtures and generators for use in hospitals, housing, and other facilities aiding the war effort. In 2017, Kohler generators were also widely used for disaster relief efforts during hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria.

Kohler continued to innovate in the power generator space over the years to follow through both internal development and acquisitions. The company acquired Italian diesel engine manufacturer Lombardini S.r.l. in 2007, Uninterruptible Power Supplies Ltd. from the United Kingdom in 2008, and Clarke Energy, Ltd., an expert in installing and maintaining engine-driven power plants based in Liverpool, England, in 2017.

Home, Small Business & Industrial Generators

Kohler sells dozens of generator models designed for backing up a home or small business, providing power to a campsite or other remote location, and for large-scale industrial and construction applications. Maximum power ranges from 1.8 kilowatts for a portable, solar-powered generator up to 4,000 kW for a diesel-powered industrial generator. Kohler portable generators range from 1.8 to 12.3 kW; home and small business models range from 6 to 150 kW; mobile or towable models range from 22 to 154 kW; industrial diesel models range from 13 to 4,000 kW; and natural gas, propane, and dual-fuel models range from 25 to 1,350 kW.

Kohler categorizes its generators not only based on application or industry, but also on usage cases such as continuous, prime, or standby power. Other differences between models include single-phase or three-phase, off-grid backup vs. utility backup, 50 or 60 hertz, and United States Environmental Protection Agency emissions certifications, including Stationary Emergency, Stationary Non-Emergency, Certified For Prime Power and Standby Applications, and Tier 4 Final. Home and small business models are also available with aluminum, steel, or composite enclosures.
